.38 Special and .357 Magnum Self-Defense Ammo Ballistics Test
Barnes, a company famous for their hunting, law enforcement, and match-grade projectiles, now offers TAC-XPD Defense Handgun as a line of loaded ammunition which can’t be beat! These .357 Magnum rounds utilize Techni-Crom plated brass casings which offer twice as much corrosion resistance as the nickel-plated variety and provide even smoother feeding and ejection via a minuscule friction coefficient. That means that these reloadable cartridge cases will always slide effortlessly into the cylinder and will never resist movement from your favorite wheel-gun’s ejector rod. Each casing is equipped with a clean-igniting Boxer primer, filled with low-flash propellant, and crowned with Barnes’s time-proven TAC-XP projectile.
The TAC-XP is a hollow-point bullet with a width mouth, deep-reaching cavity and a circumferential divot at its major diameter. Upon impact, the all-copper bullet is designed to peel back into sections at its top half while the divot prevents separation for ultimate weight retention. This results in an expanding bullet which can penetrate barriers like auto-glass and plywood without deflection while still delivering threat-stopping energy to the vital organs of a target with reduced risk of over-penetration. Barnes designed these rounds with concealed carry in mind and achieved their published muzzle velocity of 1,200 feet-per-second using a 2-inch test barrel which is more akin to compact revolvers. Since this speed is combined with a bullet weight of 125 grains, shooters can expect a relatively light recoil impulse.
Barnes’s distinctive projectile designs have been credited for taking down big game and answering law enforcement needs since 1932. Their new line of TAC-XPD ammunition was introduced in 2013 as a premium offering for shooters who either don’t reload, or would rather place their confidence in factory ammunition built using the very best in modern components.
